Poetry, wine, the zither, and chess can dispel sorrow, Yet with no guests at the table, it is hard to find joy. Playing or singing, who is there to appreciate its beauty? Though drinking cold wine aplenty, it remains a cause for grief.
Story and textual notes
Bai Juyi was a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. Possessing peerless talent, his political career was not smooth. The imagery of this lot also appeared in Bai Juyi's famous work 'Song of the Pipa': 'What do I hear here from dusk to dawn? The cuckoo crying blood and the gibbon's mournful wail.'
Interpretation
On spring river flower-mornings and autumn moon-nights, I often take up wine and drink alone. Poetry, wine, the zither, and chess can certainly dispel sorrow, but without companions, how can one enjoy oneself? Singing and playing on one's own, who will appreciate it? Drinking alone is cold and sorrowful. This is a most unfavorable oracle lot; one should cultivate character. Even in favorable circumstances, sorrow is inevitable. It is urgent to widely form good relationships and share goodness with others. In this way, prayers will be answered and worries cleared. Since this oracle lot has more bad fortune than good, it is advisable to pray and seek blessings at the local shrine.
