Although Great Shun farmed at Mount Li, His heart was always filial to his two stubborn parents. The elephants in the field resemble the state of the home, Good and evil are clearly distinguished here.
Story and textual notes
Shun was a leader of a tribal alliance in ancient China. 'Great Shun' is a respectful title.
Interpretation
This lot carries the meaning of filial piety moving heaven. Although Great Shun farmed in the place called Mount Li, his heart deeply missed his parents at home. What is most commendable is that these two elders were rather obstinate and stubborn, yet Great Shun served his parents with the utmost filial piety. While Great Shun was working, the two elders would often argue, requiring him to rush home to mediate. Fortunately, the elephants they kept, moved by Great Shun's kindness, were very obedient, helping him with farming and household chores.
