Lot poem
When Heaven is about to place a great task on this person, It first toils their muscles and bones and makes their body suffer. Do not say that beautiful scenes come easily, For poverty and wealth both have their prior causes.
Story and textual notes
Tang Monk, namely Tang Sanzang, originally surnamed Chen, dharma name Xuanzang, was a prominent monk of the Tang Dynasty. He traveled to India to study Buddhist scriptures, returning to China after more than ten years, and fully dedicated himself to translating scriptures, totaling 1,335 volumes. His arduous journey to obtain scriptures from the West is widely spread among the people, with the 'Journey to the West' being the most popular version.
Interpretation
This oracle lot means sweetness after bitterness, and that one should do their best in everything. When Heaven wants a person to do great things, it must first toil their muscles and bones, make their heart and mind suffer, and even make them go hungry. Do not ever think that good times fall from the sky. Whether a person enjoys blessings or suffers in poverty today, there is always a prior cause.
