Story and textual notes
Sima Xiangru was a learned scholar who excelled in playing the lute, chess, calligraphy, and painting. His rhapsodic writings were magnificent, and he was later appreciated by Emperor Wu of Han and appointed as an official.
Interpretation
This oracle lot recounts the touching story of Sima Xiangru inscribing the bridge before he became famous. After ten years of study in a cold window, he finally achieved academic success, yet had no opportunity to manifest his great ambitions. Sima Xiangru inscribed thirteen characters on a bridge in his hometown of Chengdu, Sichuan: 'If one day I do not ride in a carriage drawn by four horses, I shall not cross this bridge again!' His determination was incredibly firm. In all matters, one must set clear goals and spare no effort; naturally, it is difficult at first but easier later. Heaven never fails good-hearted people; if one cultivates virtue, everything will be auspicious and free of misfortune. This oracle lot presents a scene of happiness and fulfillment.
