Zhuangzi fell into a deep sleep and dreamed of becoming a butterfly, Fluttering and flying into the midst of flowers. After gathering the heavenly fragrance and returning, He was still in his warm bed and soft pillows.
Story and textual notes
Zhuang Zhou was an outstanding philosopher during the Warring States period. He advocated quietude and non-action (wu wei) and wrote extensively. King Wei of Chu offered him sweet words and rich rewards to appoint him prime minister, but Zhuang Zhou refused. During the Tang Dynasty, Daoism was highly revered, and in the first year of the Tianbao era, Zhuangzi was honored as the 'True Man of Nanhua' (Nanhua Zhenren).
Interpretation
The ancient thinker Zhuang Zhou dreamed that he turned into a butterfly, flying into flowers to gather nectar. Upon waking, he found himself still in his warm bed and soft pillows.
