Story and textual notes
Wu Yinzhi was an upright official who governed Guangdong Province. He loved the people as his own children. Later, when he resigned and left, he departed empty-handed. Grateful for his benevolent governance, the people offered him various gifts, all of which Wu Yinzhi declined. However, as his returning boat sailed along the Pearl River...
Interpretation
Suddenly, a violent storm arose. Wu Yinzhi immediately questioned his family and subordinates if anyone had accepted bribes or gifts. Everyone denied it, but someone reminded him that the agarwood fan in Madam Wu's hand was a gift from a village elder. Wu Yinzhi immediately burned incense to pray to Heaven, and then threw the agarwood fan into the river. As expected, the wind and waves calmed down, and a small island appeared in the river, which is today's Agarwood Harbor (Chenxiang Pu). Commuters crossing the river always recall Wu Yinzhi's integrity. For those who draw this lot, everything is stable. Although there may be minor misfortune amidst good fortune, it will turn out well in the end. Do not worry.
