The Qin army suffered a crushing defeat at Mount Xiao, Its three generals were all captured and then released. Because they did not heed Jian Shu's advice, They turned back their weapons, abandoned their armor, and returned to Qin.
Story and textual notes
During the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Mu of Qin wanted to send troops to invade the states of Zheng and Jin. Jian Shu, an elderly minister, strongly advised against it, urging him not to engage in such an unprincipled and unjust campaign. However, Duke Mu of Qin persisted in his own way, resulting in a crushing defeat at Mount Xiao, where the three commanders of the army were all captured alive. Since the mother of the Ruler of Jin was the daughter of Duke Mu of Qin, Duke Kang of Jin released the defeated army out of respect for his maternal grandfather. However, they had to return to Qin with reversed weapons and abandoned armor.
Interpretation
This oracle lot contains many hazards: first, delusion; second, ignoring wise counsel and acting willfully; third, defeat; fourth, humiliation. It is advisable to take great care to avoid danger. This oracle lot is extremely perilous. Those who obtain this lot face many misfortunes and few blessings. One must perform more good deeds to turn misfortune into fortune, and pray to heaven for blessings.
