Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 59
The 59th Oracle Lot: Dong Shi Mimicking a Frown
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
The silk-washing girl is matchless in beauty, Her charm caused the fall of the Kingdom of Wu. Most annoying is Dong Shi mimicking her frown and smile, How can a wild pheasant surpass the mythical phoenix?
Story and textual notes
Xi Shi was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Yue was almost destroyed by the State of Wu. Later, King Goujian of Yue was presented with Xi Shi by Fan Li to sue for peace with Wu. After King Fuchai of Wu obtained Xi Shi, he became debauched and confused, and was eventually destroyed by the King of Yue.
Interpretation
This oracle lot speaks of Xi Shi, the silk-washing girl, whose matchless beauty could collapse a city with one smile and a nation with another. The most foolish is the ugly Dong Shi, who spends all day mimicking Xi Shi's frowning expression, thinking it would win others' affection. But a wild pheasant is just a wild pheasant; how can it pose as a phoenix? Those who obtain this oracle lot must adhere to their status and accept their fate, yield to the times and listen to heaven, and must not let their ambitions fly too high to make unrealistic demands. Knowing that one is inferior to others but forcing oneself to imitate them will only lead to poor results, bringing mostly misfortune and little blessing.
Traditional summary
Wealth will be lost and wasted, and travelers have not arrived. Silkworms and livestock yield no profit. Pregnancy and illness both bring physical suffering. The household is not at peace and requires accumulated good deeds for remedy. Marriage inquiries are even worse. Planned endeavors should not be pursued.
