Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 60
The 60th Oracle Lot: Li Bai Writing a Letter to the Barbarians While Drunk
Traditional fortune label: Neutral
Lot poem
Writing the peace treaty while drunk, the brush strokes flow like clouds and mist, Sleeping every day in the taverns of Chang'an. Even if the Tang Emperor issues a decree to summon him, Calling him again, he would not board the Magnolia Boat.
Story and textual notes
The poet Li Bai was once insulted by the treacherous ministers Yang Guozhong and Gao Lishi. Yang Guozhong once ridiculed Li Bai, asking, "What is your writing worth? You are only fit to grind ink for me!" Gao Lishi agreed, "No, he is not even qualified to grind ink; he is only fit to take off boots and hold shoes."
Interpretation
A barbarian state sent an envoy to Chang'an, making many threats and demands. The most critical issue was that no one in the imperial court could communicate with the envoy. At that time, someone recommended Li Bai to the Emperor, but unfortunately, Li Bai was heavily drunk. The Emperor issued a decree to invite him to the palace and personally fed him sober-up soup. Once Li Bai woke up, he demanded that Yang Guozhong grind ink and Gao Lishi pull off his boots. With his eyes blurred by alcohol, his brush flowing like clouds and smoke, he wrote the response letter to the barbarians, frightening them so much that they dared not invade again. Those who obtain this oracle lot should view everything with equanimity and avoid greed. Do not dispute who is right or wrong with others. Moreover, form is emptiness and emptiness is form; do not be burdened by material desires. Taking a step back will naturally bring happiness. Judging by the lot, all matters will proceed steadily and without obstacles.
