Lot 62: Confucius Upholds the Way
Traditional fortune label: Moderate
Lot poem
Here lies a beautiful jade hidden in a chest, Do not waste time bargaining for a good price. It can indeed be sold when the right buyer comes, Why should this precious item view itself as ordinary?
Story and textual notes
Confucius was a sage. In terms of knowledge, morality, and thought, he is a model for all generations. However, his political career and official fortune were poor, so he dedicated his lifelong energy to educating students and writing books to establish his teachings.
Interpretation
This lot means: a person's talent and learning are like a piece of beautiful jade, which should be cherished and kept in a chest, not waiting to be sold for a high price. Rather, one must wait for the right opportunity; if one meets someone with foresight who truly appreciates and recognizes their worth, that is another matter. Why should those who have unrecognized talents always indulge in self-pity?
Traditional summary
Travelers have not arrived; recovery from illness is delayed; pregnancy has no obstacles; marriage is unsuitable; silkworms and livestock yield minimal profit; if seeking wealth, one must follow proper principles; planned endeavors should wait for the right time; the household is auspicious, but one must strive for self-cultivation.
