Lot poem
A single bamboo bowl of rice and a gourd of water in a narrow alley are no cause for sorrow, Though bystanders look on with great worry. They do not know that delighting in the Way makes one forget poverty, And the noble name of the Second Sage will remain for eternity.
Story and textual notes
Yan Hui, a native of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period, was Confucius's favorite disciple. The world honors Confucius as the Ultimate Sage. Some once called Yan Hui the Second Sage, but later most people bestowed the title of Second Sage upon Mencius, and instead called Yan Hui the Restorer Sage.
Interpretation
This lot is Confucius's praise for Yan Hui: Yan Hui is truly a virtuous man; he delights in the Way and is content with poverty, living in a narrow alley with only a single bowl of food and a cup of water. Others worry for him when they see his living conditions, but he is free of worries and sorrow. People should realize that if one devotes oneself to learning and cultivating the Way, one can forget poverty. In all matters, one must endure poverty and hardship, and not covet any financial gains. Wholeheartedly cultivate kindness, and reputation will follow naturally, leaving an immortal legacy. Even if poor for a lifetime, it poses no harm. This lot has only good fortune and no misfortune.
