Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 7
The Seventh Oracle Lot: Rengui Returns Home
Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune Oracle Lot
Lot poem
As autumn arrives, the migratory wild geese head south, Red leaves flutter and fill the courtyard. Sounds of laundry beaters atop the city walls strike the ear sharply, River maples are like fire by the fishing ledge.
Story and textual notes
Xue Rengui, a famous general of the Tang dynasty, led his army to conquer the East, repeatedly achieving military merits and was enfeoffed as the Duke of Pingyang County. After his conquest of the East, Xue Rengui returned to court in victory, was enfeoffed as king, and returned home. At that time, autumn was turning cold, wild geese flew south, red leaves withered, and people were washing winter clothes. This desolation of autumn, though causing no harm, lacks any joyful atmosphere.
Interpretation
This oracle lot depicts the fine scene of Xue Rengui returning home in glory after conquering the East, returning to court in victory, and receiving awards for his merits. Unfortunately, soldiers age easily, having spent their youth in war, and on the journey home, they happen to meet autumn. With migratory geese flying south and red leaves fluttering, the most poignant and sorrowful sight is that many wives of soldiers are washing clothes with wooden beaters atop the city wall. This implies that there will be a minor flaw in an otherwise perfect situation, and that disappointing or frustrating things may occur.
Traditional summary
Regarding the household, be cautious and guard; marriage is discordant; wealth is ordinary; silkworms and livestock will suffer slight damage; for illness and pregnancy, prayer is good; travelers are delayed and have not returned home; asking about plans, there is little good fortune.
