The 70th Oracle Lot: The Old Man of the Frontier Loses His Horse

Traditional fortune label: Moderate

Lot poem

Just like the old man of the frontier in the past, Even though he lost his horse midway. No one knows whether it is a blessing or a curse, Only at the end will the full story become clear.

Story and textual notes

In ancient times, an old man living near the frontier lost a horse. He took it calmly. Later, the horse returned, bringing along a young stallion. When the old man's son rode this young horse, he accidentally fell and broke his leg; the old man again took it calmly. Soon after, all the able-bodied men in the village were conscripted to build the Great Wall, but the old man's son was exempted from service due to his injury, thus saving his life.

Interpretation

This oracle lot implies that things will fluctuate; bad things can turn into good things, and good things can also turn into bad things. However, we can only be like the old man of the frontier of that time, temporarily accepting reality. Whether it is a blessing or a curse, we must remain calm and unruffled; at the end of the day, there will be an outcome for good and evil. It is difficult to judge blessing and misfortune in life, but for those who do good, misfortune can turn into blessing. If you draw this oracle lot, you must not be overjoyed by present blessings, nor should you grieve over present misfortunes. You must make up your mind to do good and help others. The fortune of this oracle lot is hard to determine and depends on one's own actions; everything should be approached with caution to avoid mistakes.

Traditional summary

Plans and aspirations are not very suitable; pregnancy and illness require prayer; silkworms and livestock must be managed with caution; the traveler has not arrived; wealth is also meager; marriage need not be discussed; whether the household is safe is hard to determine at this time.
