Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 93
The 93rd Oracle Lot: Confucius Hears Wei Music
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable Oracle Lot
Lot poem
The music of Zheng and Wei is unbearable to hear, Its licentious wind corrupts customs and will collapse the state. It leads people deep into a maze of delusion, What is played is not the sound of ancient music at all.
Story and textual notes
The music of the states of Zheng and Wei strayed from the correct path, was demoralizing, and had unhealthy themes—by today's standards, it would be vulgar and obscene. Confucius heard it and strongly condemned it. Later, Zheng and Wei ultimately fell due to cultural degeneration, and this music could be considered the music of a doomed nation.
Interpretation
The oracle lot says: The music of Zheng and Wei is truly awful! It incites lust and corrupts public morals, and will sooner or later lead to the ruin of the state. Because what it plays is not proper music at all; listening to it too much will erode one's aspirations and lead one astray. Obtaining this lot serves as a warning, enabling one to seek good fortune and avoid misfortune. Those who obtain this oracle lot must be cautious in all matters, choose what is good and follow it, and must not covet any sensual pleasures or financial benefits that do not conform to righteousness, which would surely lead to the ruin of the family and loss of life. One must guard against petty people spreading gossip, and be careful not to easily believe others' words.
Traditional summary
Wealth is hard to seek; illness heals slowly; travelers are blocked; marriage is unsuitable; silkworms and livestock yield no profit; plans and hopes should not be pursued; pregnancy carries alarms, prayer is advised; the home is inauspicious, caution is needed.
